Visual Arts at Wellesley

At Wellesley, Visual Art is a vibrant and an integral part of the learning journey where every boy is encouraged to see himself as an artist.

A rich programme guided by a practicing artist

The Visual Arts programme is led by an experienced practicing artist. Drawing inspiration from Pablo Picasso’s belief that “every child is an artist,” each lesson provides a supportive, engaging environment where boys are guided step by step, especially in the early years.

As they move through the school, the structure gradually loosens, allowing for more autonomy, expression, and artistic ownership. By Year 8, Wellesley boys are confidently developing their own style and creative voice.

Technique, materials and artistic exploration

Visual Art at Wellesley is rich in both technique and context. Boys are introduced to a wide range of materials and processes including drawing, painting, mixed media, collage, printmaking, digital art, photography, ceramics, sculpture, and textiles.

Lessons often begin with stories from art history, where students learn about celebrated artists and how their lives influenced their work. These narratives serve as springboards into hands-on practice, where students explore, experiment, refine their skills, and grow. Classes are timetabled weekly for half a term, with visual art frequently integrated into broader classroom inquiry topics.

Inspiring exhibitions and artist residencies

Beyond regular classes, Wellesley offers extraordinary opportunities to engage with art. The biennial Artist in Residence programme brings a professional artist to work on-site with students, culminating in an exciting school-wide Art Week where every student creates artwork over three days and exhibits alongside the resident artist. In alternate years, the school hosts ARTBOURNE, transforming the Wellesley Hall into a curated gallery space featuring professional local artists.

Students can also access the art room during lunchtimes, participate in school exhibitions, and senior boys can join an advanced Art Extension programme. Through visual art, Wellesley fosters resilience, encourages risk-taking, and gives boys a powerful avenue for self-expression.
