Physical Education and sport at Wellesley

PE and sport at Wellesley build healthy bodies and healthy minds, with a comprehensive programme that grows with our boys from Years 1 to 8.

A progressive curriculum for every stage

Wellesley offers two distinct pathways for physical development: Physical Education as a specialised subject aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum, and In-School Sport featuring competitive fixtures.

Physical Education at Wellesley focuses on fostering healthy relationships with physical activity and Hauora. All boys participate in Physical Education throughout the year during designated times. The Junior syndicate engages in one session weekly, while the Middle and Senior syndicates participate in three sessions per fortnight.

Junior Physical Education (Years 1-4)

Physical Education for Years 1 through 4 initiates students into healthy lifestyle habits through physical activity. The programme centres on game-based play and imaginative games. As students progress to Years 3 and 4, learning objectives increasingly align with our Summer and Winter In-School Sport programmes.

Middle and Senior Physical Education (Years 5-8)

Years 5 and 6 students participate in a structured Physical Education programme enriched by the New Zealand Curriculum. The programme teaches boys about physical activity, organised around four key themes: Movement sequences, collaboration, strategic play, and Kaitiakitanga.

Inter-school competition and team sport

From Years 5 to 8, boys have the chance to play for school teams that compete in traditional inter-school fixtures. These sports are coached and managed by school staff and external coaches, with Year 5 and 6 teams known as ‘Colts’ teams.

In-School Sport programmes

The Summer and Winter In-School Sport programmes build upon two foundational pillars promoting development. All in-school sport experiences occur during school hours.

Years 3-6: Participation focus

Students experience various summer and winter sports, developing gross motor skills, interpersonal abilities, and ball-handling techniques. Years 5 and 6 students engage in fixtures against other schools, demonstrating their progress while maintaining emphasis on participation. Student selection follows a rotation system, ensuring equitable opportunities for all.

Years 7-8: Competition and excellence

The Senior Sport environment presents greater complexity than earlier year levels. Students undergo trials for team selection, access additional training sessions, and participate in fixtures with schools throughout New Zealand. This competitive setting develops fundamental skills, resilience, and interpersonal abilities in challenging contexts. Sport remains vital to holistic development, preparing students to become well-rounded individuals who approach future challenges with enthusiasm, resilience, and determination.

Additional costs may apply to support these activities.
